West Covina Buddhist Temple Open House

On Wednesday, March 31 at 7:00 pm, West Covina Buddhist Temple invites the public to attend their Open House and Movie Night. The Life of the Buddha, an informative 1 hour 2003 BBC/Discovery Channel Production, will be shown and light refreshments will be served. The event is free of charge. WCBT receives many "What is Buddhism?" questions at the LivingDharma.org website, both from people seeking an alternative spiritual path, and from many local college students (enrolled in "World Religions," "Cultural Anthropology," and other classes), and this BBC documentary is an excellent contemporary introduction to Buddhism. WCBT's Open House and Movie Night is open to Buddhists and non-Buddhists alike. Please join us if you can

The temple is located at 1203 W. Puente Ave, West Covina, 91790 (within the East San Gabriel Valley Japanese Community Center). Click for a flyer and map. For questions, e-mail us or call (626) 913-0622.

The Life of the Buddha is a well-written documentary on the fascinating story of the Buddha's life and teachings

Key Points made in The Life of the Buddha
-The recent discovery of the birthplace and ancient home of the historical Buddha by archeologist Dr. Robin Coningham firmly establishes that the Buddha was indeed a historical person.

-The famous story of the “plowing festival” is told; at the age of 9, the young Buddha had already realized the working of karma and interconnectedness of life.

-The Story of the Four Gates tells his shocking encounter with aging, illness, and death, and with the monk who pointed the Buddha towards the path to finding the ultimate truth.

-The Buddha’s awakening is depicted; his “battle” with Mara (his own ego) during meditation and his eventual awakening to the realization that it is our desire and ignorance that are at the root of our suffering.

-Westerners are not drawn to Buddhism to follow the path of the monk, but because Buddhism offers a practical teaching that can positively affect our everyday life.

-As the film states, “The Buddha’s awakening 2500 years ago gave rise to the first world religion, a religion without a god, where the path to Nirvana lies in the mind of each and every one of us.”
